Lewis D. Wingo served as a private, U. S. Army, Co. K., 115 Regiment, Illinois Infantry Volunteers, Civil War. He contracted Tuberculosis, was hospitalized, and discharget on 4/11/1863.
Lewis and wife Nancy died of tuberculois soon after the war.
Augustus I. Bronson, a New York Quaker and subscription school teacher was made legal guardian of the orphan Wingo children on October 16, 1869, but he and his wife Julia only raised Lydia "Cora" Wingo and Washington "Washy" Wingo with the remaining sisters, Marretta and Martha Alvina being reared by other families.
