Mary Hatton

(1637 - 1678)

Mary Hatton came to the Maryland Colony in 1649 with her widowed mother, Margaret Hatton, brothers William and Richard and three sisters; Eleanor, Elizabeth and Barbara, They were sponsored by their uncle, Thomas Hatton, who was Secretary of State and Attorney General to Lord Cecil Calvert, the Govenor of Maryland. Thomas Hatton was killed in 1655 at the Battle of Severn, fought between Lord Baltimore's partisans ans a band of Puritans, who having been driven out of Cavilier Virginia, sought to take up land in Maryland. The Hattons owed their position in Maryland Society not merely to the high posts bur also the greater prestige of being collateral descendents of Sir Christopher Hatton, Lord Chancellor of England and Chancellor of Oxford University during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Sir Christopher was the Queen's spokesman over a period of 20 years, first in the House of Commonss, then the House of Lords. More than this, he was the Queen's favorite courtier, second only, and then only certain periods to the Earl of Leicester. It is generally believed that Hatton and Leicester were the Queen's lovers. Despite this they remained loyal friends. Letters of the Colonial period show that Thomas Hatton and Mary Hatton Wade were considered direct descendants of Lord Chancellor Christopher Hatton. This was not true. They are the descendants of the second Sir Christopher Hatton, who was the cousin, god son, and eventual chief hear to the Lord Chancellor. The Lord Chancellor never married, a prudent course of action, since the Queen was prone to be jealous when one of her favorites took a wife. Lor Chancellor Hatton did father an illigitimate offspring, a situation the Queen seems to taken for granted. It appears, according to British genealogists that Richard Hatton, father of Mary Hatton Wade, was the son of Robert Hatton, the Grandson of Sir Christopher Hatton who inherited the Lord Chancellor's estates. To conclude the Hatton line, the Second Sir Christopher Hatton was the son of John Hatton, Esquire of Stanton, Cambridgeshire, and Jane Shutte Hatton.
