The Tunis family name was a patronymic, in the sense that Arendt's father'sgiven name was Tunis, so Arendt was on occasions called Arendt Tunes, in the fashionof the Dutch and low Germany communities of the time. In addition, the family actually had a surname, namely, Klincken. For this reason the two brothers' descendants confusingly have different family names today-- Tunes and Klincken.Tunis = "tone" Klinken = "sound" - (Dutch-German) identicalAbraham Tennis and Arent Klinken and Jan Williams (all of whom were our ancestors) were naturalized as British subjects in Germantown, on March 7, 1691/92. [13]The first tax list of Phila. Co., 26 Sept. 1693, lists, in Germantown, both Aert Klinken and Abraham Tunes, assessed respectively with real and personal property valued at £80 and £50. [6: vol. 8, p82ff]Aret Klincken signed his will 12m, 10, 1707/08, and it was proved ten days later. He names his wife Niske; son Anthony; daughters Ellin Williams and Eunike, wife of Kunrad Kunders. Executors were his nephew Dirck Jansen, and Francis Daniel Pastorious. Witnesses were Dennis Kunders, Abraham Teunis, et al. [10] A lot is known about Aret Klincken, a few items which I mention.Due to his religious principles, he declined to be burgess in Germantown in 1695. On Dec. 30, 1701 he was appointed overseer to collect subscriptions and arrange with a school teacher to start the first school in Germantown. [6: vol. 4, p 26ff]
