Henry Brawner and his wife, Mary Brawner, believed to be the first Brawners in America, arrived in the 1600s and settled in Charles County, Maryland. Henry first registered his cattle marks in Charles County in 1682. In 1687 Henry and Mary received 100 acres of land called "Fortune" "for their service performed in the Province." and acquired 100 acres called "Hopewell" by grant from William Prior. Henry patented Fortune and purchased Hopewell. They were located on the south side of Mattawoman Creek adjoining each other, "and beholden of the Manor of Zachia in Charles County, Province of Maryland". Zachia was the Manor inhabited by the Calverts. Henry died in 1698 in Charles County and left four sons, Edward, Henry, William and John, and a daughter, Mary. His widow, Mary, remarried to William Elliott and died in Prince George's County, MD in 1727.

From the manuscript "Burlean Hall", by Charles Walthall, 1995 (ms available at Charles County Community College Library): Zacaya Mannour of 6, 000 acres (which included Zekiah Swamp) was patented to the Lord Proprietary, Cecilius Calvert in 1667. After that date the land on which Burlean Hall sits and all neighboring tracts were described as part of Zacya Manor. Because the 1673 map by Augustine Hernnan incorrectly reads: "Zachkia Swamp alias Pangayo" many have concluded Zacaya and Pagaya were identical. They wre not for Pangay Mannour of 1, 200 acres was patented separately and was located in the Port Tobacco area. In 1672 Charles wrote to his father Cecilius, "I am now building upon your Lordship's Manor of Sachay." In 1673 the house was complete and he proposed moving "from Mattapony to Zekiah for greater Security." Thus Charles Calvert, the Third Lord Baltimore, may have lived nearby, presumably near the mouth of Allesn' Fresh Run by the navigable waterways. Some have alleged that the first Charles County courthouse was also located in the Zekiah Swamp area, but others argue it was in the Port Tobacco area. In either case, Zekiah Swamp is most remembered today as part of the escape route of John Wilkes Booth, assassin of Abraham Lincoln. Sources cited in the Manuscript: Commoners, Tributes and Chiefs, by Stephen R Potter; Captains and Mariners of Early Maryland, Maryland History Magazine 30, 215ff; The Place Names of Maryland, Hamill Kenny; Charles County, Maryland: A History, Jack D Brown, et al.
In 1717, one of my ancestors, John Clubb, patented 200 acres called "Hopewell" near the Piney Branch and Atchison's Woodyard in Zachia Manor. The survey began at "a banded Spanish Oak" (see the description below). In 1725, he patented 95 adjoining acres called "Maidens Pleasure." This farm he gave to his daughter Elizabeth and her new husband, John Wedding in 1727. (This farm was sold to Robert Middleton in 1750, reclaimed by Elizabeth Wedding and sold to Samuel Harrison in 1783). In the 1970s, my father (Curt Wedding) did a lot of research in Charles County. I have a pretty good photo copy of a survey of "The Manor of Zachia Cont[aining] 8800 acres" It's dated 1731. It's from the 13th day of a month I can't make out. Here's my best "reading" of the script at the top of the map. I've put my guesses in brackets [] and left dashes --- for letters I'm very unsure of. "I do hereby Testify that by order & Direction of C-- [Col?] John ---dale M--- [Major?] George -----, Samuel Hanson [?] & John Howard C[om--------] appa---ted by C[onif]--- and [?] of the high Court of Chancery to Examine Evidence [touching] the Bounds of his Lordships the right Honorable the Lord Proprietary's Manor In Charles County. I have C----------aed His Lord [High] Manor of Zachia. Beginning at the [Side] of the Main Fresh of Zachia [where] by [the] ------ of the C-------- ag--- [from the capital C on may be all one word] was there banded a [Chion---] White Oak standing in the swamp on the West Side of the [Z] main Fresh. [This appears from the map to be the southeast corner of the manor.] From thence ---- West North West one hundred & [eighty] nine perches to the uppermost boudrie of Henry Hawkins Land [formerly] by Josiah Fendall [perhaps Ferndall] Thence West North West Four hundred & Eighty one perches more At the End of which line by the [ard-ag---:] was marked a Spanish Oak Standing by a small branch [thaegal--] into Zachia on the West Side of Alex: Con[l--], Plantation, thence North North East Sixteen Hundred perches, thence East South East Eleven Hundred & twenty perches to Zachia Main Fresh thence down and with the Said fresh to the said Beginning Containing Eight thousand Eight Hundred acres of Land -George Noble Dep S[aracy] & of P- Geo County" The map shows the "Jordan Main branch looping back and forth across the northern edge of the Manor. The names Ed [Jenkins] Go: Baggott and Tho: Spea-- are listed along the northern edge as well. The Zachia Main Fresh is the eastern boundry going south southwest from the northeast corner to the southeast corner. Josiah Fendall [or Ferndall] is listed on the southern boundry. At the southwest corner there's a note about "-- Cout-- Plantation" that is just not readable, along with a drawing of the "banded Oak." About midway along the western edge, "John Roby's" is written in the Zachia section and "Wm Roby" is written just outside the Zachia boundry. I have a photo copy of a 1702 survey of Zachia Manor by Thos McPherson. It's obviously the same property. It contains lots and numbers, but I haven't found the key yet. I also have a photo copy of a survey of Zachia Manor from 1789 by John Hanson. It seems to include a bit more land on the eastern side than the earlier surveys. This one includes many names on the lots, including lots of Joseph Roby and John [Nalley] Roby near the Roby lands mentioned in the 1702 survey. This map shows two lots in the southern third of the Manor identified as "Lott No 7, His Lordships Favor" and "Lott No 9 Baltimore's Bounty." There is a Thomas Arvin listed for Lotts No 38, 33 & 40 just north of the center of the Manor. No. 40 is next to Lott No 41, listed to Stephen Roby. Lott No 54 has the name J.? Green on it a bit north of No. 40. I hope this helps. Someone who knows the geography of Charles County may be able to fill us in on the present-day landmarks that identify where Zachia Manor was.

The house called Burlean Hall, Mt. Pleasant, and referred to in Charles Walthall's manuscript as The Philpott-Posey house is situated in a part of Zachia. The house is near Faulkner, MD.

Volume II - Section entitled "State of His Lordship's Manors, " 1766, 1767, 1768. Rent Rolls - Partial Census. The following information is offered: "Mr. Arthur Trader, C. C. Land Commissioner's Office, Annapolis, MD wrote: We have never published a list of Manors as recorded in our records, as the office has always considered them to be the private estate of the Lords Baltimore, and would properly belong to the separate estate of the Proprietary." "All these lands were either sold by private sale, before the Revolution, or by the Intendent of the Revenue, as confiscated British property. They were not sold under their Manor names, but as seated farm lands." "The following reports are carefully prepared for printing from photostatic copies of the original unbound and much worn record book, extending across 2 pp. each 12 1/2" X 17 1/2", and from a few separate sheets. It has seemed impractical to here reproduce these large sheets in facsimile, and they represent the discoveries to date amongst the historical treasures of this character in the Maryland Archives. They are published throught the cooperation and courtesy of the Maryland Historical Society."

Evidently, what I can gather from the above doesn't seem to indicated that Zachiah Manor was a single manor house or plantation. It seems to be more like a section or parcel within a certain area, indicating a Manor instead of a Township. You may want to look at the books for yourself. I have copies that I purchased. Not sure what libraries would have them. Hope some of this info helps. RELATED FAMILIES: BRAWNER
Mr. Brawner is descended through the different lines from Calvert through first son and also from Thomas Green, second Governor of Maryland Colony.
Edward Brock, father of Mary, died 1714. In his will dated 1712, he bequeathed Brockhall to his four grandsons: Edward, William, James, Thomas.
WILLS 13, page 723. Probated June 19, 1714, Annapolis, Maryland.
married Mary Brock. Died in 1748.
Will in Col. 25 288, Annapolis, Maryland.
The Brawner family came to America, 1st Generation, in 1634, with Lord Baltimore, the Founder of the Maryland Colony.
Brawners of Maryland, compiled by Mrs. Mary Turpin Laytin, 3925 Seventh, N. W., Washington, D. C.
The name of Henry Brawner first appears on the records of Charles County, Maryland, when his cattle marks were recorded in 1682. Five years later, he purchased a tract of land called "Hopewell"; and the same year he patented the tract which he named "Fortune," which is described as lying on the south side of Mattawoman Creek adjoining a tract of land called Hopewell and beholden of the Manor of Zachia in Charles County, Province of Maryland, January 20, 1687.
Henry Brawner resided in Charles County, Maryland, where he died in 1698, leaving a wife, Mary Brock, and five children. The widow, Mary, married again and resided in Prince Georges County, where she died in 1727 as Mary Elliort.
Will dated 2-19-1697; 4-2-1698. Henry's will, Land Office, Annapolis, Maryland. Wills Liber 7, page 387.
Issue:
Edward Brawner. See next generation.
Henry Brawner, who was devisee in his father's will but is not mentioned in the will of his mother, evidently died before 1727 without issue.
William Brawner married Mary and resided in Prince Georges County, where he died in 1717. The birth of a son Henry is recorded in Rock Creek Parish Records. This is evidently the only child. as the widow Mary married Daniel Delosier, who joined with his wife in the settlement of the estate of William Brawner; and the final settlement states that they would have no compensation for taking care of the orphan. Issue: Henry Brawner, born 12-16-1717.
John Brawner, born April 2, 1693, married 1-8-1716, in Prince George County, Mary Dunning. John Brawner died in 1744; but as the estate overpaid, no account is found of the children. The births of three are recorded in the Rock Creek Parish Records. The widow, Mary, sold her household goods, and her name does not appear on the records of that county after 1745. She probably is the Mary Brawner who died in Fairfax County in 1765, naming sons John and Henry and grandson Thomas Heckabon. John Brawner and Wm. Stevens signed the inventory of Henry Brawner in 1744 as nearest of kin.

SECOND GENERATION
Edward Brawner, 2d, (Henry, 1st) was born in 1682, according to his own deposition. He resided in Charles County on plantation called "Fortune," which had been patented by his father in 1687.
No record has been found of his wife, as she is not mentioned in his will nor does she join him in the deed to his son, which leads one to believe that she had died many years previous.
Edward Brawner died September 5, 1767, having made a will in which he names some of his sons and grandchildren and also daughter and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Nally. The law at that time did not require all children to be devisees. The names of other children are found in his mother's will. All church records of that section of the state have been lost.
Will probated January 3, 1767; recorded in book A D No. 5, page 353, La Plata, Charles County, Maryland.
Issue:
Edward Brawner married Elizabeth Wheeler, daughter of Richard Wheeler of that county. Edward resided in Frederick County, where he died in 1760, leaving the following children: Richard, Thomas, Henry, Edward, William, Elizabeth, John. The final settlement of the estate states that there were other daughters whose names were not given in the account.
Elizabeth Brawner married.. Grant.
Henry Brawner married Elizabeth Barton, 2-7-1726/7. Henry died intestate in 1744; and the final settlement of his estate gives to six children, names not given, and to the widow, who had then married Aaron Nally. Edward Brawner devises to his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Nally. In 1767, she deeds land to her Brawner and Nally sons a few months previous to her marriage to her third husband, Charles Smoot. Issue: Henry Brawner, William Brawner, Barton Brawner, three other children, probably girls.
Thomas Brawner, mentioned in grandmother's will.

John Brawner, who was executor of his father's estate.
Abagail Brawner married John Wade. See next generation.
Benjamin Brawner, who inherited the home of his ancestors.
Joseph Brawner married Sarah Jackson, widow of Thomas.

Subject Zachia Manor, etc.
