Mattie Meredith was a farm wife until her husband died in 1954. She then rented her farm and moved to Leitchfield, Kentucky. There she clerked in her daughter Mary Helen's women's clothing store, Helen's Dress Shop. Later she built a small house in Leitchfield, where she lived until her death by cancer.
