Notes
Death
Cause of Death: DrowningWas a crew member of the scow," Haeremai", which sailed from Auckland
for Wellington on 17 May 1906 with a cargo of timber. On the 19 May,
it was sighted of the East Cape, but then disappeared, and was never
seen again. Around the 5 July 1906, the captain of the vessel "Toroa"
reported seeing the tilting topmast of a vessel between Cape Terewiti
and Sinclair Head, about five miles south of Cape Terewiti. Only a
dark mass was seen below the water. The vessel was not identified, but
was presumed to be the "Harermai".
James's father, Joseph Thomas George MORRIS (captain of the vessel)
and his brother, William Kerien MORRIS, were also aboard, and lost at
sea.
