Cause of Death: DrowningJoseph T G MORRIS was the captain of the scow," Haeremai", which
sailed from Auckland for Wellington on 17 May 1906 with a cargo of
timber. On the 19 May, it was sighted of the East Cape, but then
disappeared, and was never seen again. Around the 5 July 1906, the
captain of the vessel "Toroa" reported seeing the tilting topmast of a
vessel between Cape Terewiti and Sinclair Head, about five miles south
of Cape Terewiti . Only a dark mass was seen below the water. The
vessel was not identified, but was presumed to be the "Haeremai".
Two of Captain MORRIS's sons were amongst the crew.
