Ivy Grace "Poss" TOMKINS

(26 Jun 1900 - 17 Oct 1995)

Ivy was born on 26th June, 1900 at WY YUNG (near Bairnsdale) Victoria, the youngest child of John George Tomkins and Elizabeth Miles. She has outlived all her brothers, George, Ern and Wal and her sister Rene. When she was aged 7 years the family moved to Queensland to a property which has been part of Jimbour Station on the Darling Downs and had to help her father with the sheep when her brothers were away in World War I.

After World War I, the family lived at Ipswich and then in Brisbane at Rosalie and Toowong while Ivy worked in the clothing manufacturing business and was forewoman at a tailoring business when World War 2 commenced. The tailoring business was requisitioned by the Defence Department to make Air Force uniforms. Ivy joined volunteer workers in her own time, gaining her St John's Ambulance Certificate and helped as a volunteer at the now Royal Brisbane Hospital several evenings each week.

In May, 1946, she married George Albrecht and lived at Highgate Hill, helping at George's cafe at Spring Hill in the evenings. About 1966, George and Ivy and George's sister Edith and her husband Ric Rawlings moved to Palm Beach, where George and Ric built a house which both couples shared until both Edith and George passed away during the early 1970's. Ivy had helped at George's cake shop until George retired.

Subsequently, in 1975, Ivy re-married Ric, but this happy union was to last less then 12 months before Ric passed away.

Ivy remained at Palm Beach until 1984, when she moved to Brighton to be nearer to sister-in-law, Jean. In 1992 she was admitted to Jacaranda Village and then to Corinya Nursing Home about 2 monts prior to her death. She passed away quietly and peacefully at about Quarter to Seven on Tuesday morning.

Ivy was a caring person, caring for both her parents in their later years. Others will be remembering, with gratitude and affection, assistance given to them in a time of need. We ask that you will remember Ivy as the happy, vibrant, caring person that she was for so many, many years.
