Individual Details
Joshua Herbert PERRYMAN
(5 Feb 1832 - 30 Aug 1913)
Relative of Faith Joss, Australia
Joshua sailed from Liverpool on board the "Samuel Locke" on the 27th April 1857, arriving in Melbourne on the 28th August 1857. Joshua settled in Mount Pleasant, Adelaide. There he married Pleasant Dewell. Joshua and Pleasant decided to travel East in search of land. They made the journey by bullock dray and horses in 1868, finally taking up land in Table Top. Joshua was granted a free selection of land at Table Top in the parish of Jindera - 205 acres - (Albury newspaper 11th March 1868). The property was named "Carisbrook" and remained in the Perryman family until 1937. It is situated in Perryman's Lane, Table Top, approx, 12 miles from Albury and runs from the Hume Highway to the Olympic Highway. "Carisbrook" was sold to George and Olive Blakely. During a drought Joshua bought a train load of sheep for which he paid nine pence per head. As a result of their poor condition, on arrival at the Table Top Railway Station, a lorry drawn by three horses was required to cart the dead ones away. The local graziers could not understand why he bought these sheep when it was so dry, but the sheep were barely in the paddock when the rain began to fall, and within a week, he could have sold at 7/6 per head. Joshua was known on many occasions to have similar good fortune.
Joshua listed on the 1841 and 1851 Devon censuses.
Michael says: "I come from the Joshua b.1832 who sailed on the Samuel Locke in 1857. He and his brother Henry b1836, settled on adjacent blocks at Table Top just north of Albury in 1868. Since my father had 5 sisters and 5 step-sisters, we have very few Perrymans left."
