Marriage
WILLET -- McLAINOn Saturday afternoon, Dec. 7th, 1929, the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Willet on Des Moines Street was the setting for a very pretty wedding ceremony when their daughter, Frances was united in marrriage to Mr. Maynard McLain, youngest son of Mrs. and Mrs. W. J. McLain in the presence of the immediate family and a few friends.
Promptly at 4 o'clock Miss Catherine Karr sang "At Dawning" and "I Love You Truly" accompanied by Mrs. C. H. Manatt at the piano and to the strains of Mandelssohn's Wedding March, the bridal couple descended the stairway preceded by their attendants, Miss Mary Johnson of Boone, a college friend of the bride and Mr. Howard Montgomery of Iowa City. Taking their places before a wedding bower of ferns and roses, the Rev. Russell G. Nye pronounced the words which made them husband and wife using the beautiful ring service, Mrs. Manatt playing softly during the candle light ceremony.
The bride wore a gown of white satin faced crepe, tight fitting bodice, with tierred skirt, uneven hem line hanging ankle length in the back and carried a shower bouquet of roses and sweet peas. The bride's attendant wore a gown of pale green crepe-de-chene and carried a bouquet of yellow tea roses. The groom wore a suit of Oxford grey.
After congratulations, a two course dinner was served by Mrs. U. J. Hanssen and Mrs. Percy Ostrom, cousins of the bride, Mrs. Clarence Bickford, Mrs. Virgil Cobb and Miss Marjory Armstrong, the latter being college friends of the bride from Des Moines. The young couple left immediately after the wedding dinner for a month's automobile trip to California.
The bride grew to womanhood in this community, graduating from Brooklyn High School in the class of 1928 afterward attending Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines and until recently has been employed there. The groom also grew to manhood in this community graduating from Brooklyn High School in the class of 1926, afterward attending Ames College where he was affilitated with Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. For the past two years he has farmed his fathers' farm southeast of Brooklyn.
The McLain's celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1979.
