ANSEL BRENIMAN, EX-FOOTBALL COACH AT CANOGA PARK HIGH: Newspaper Obituary and Death NoticeDaily News of Los Angeles (CA) - Thursday, May 2, 1996
Deceased Name: ANSEL BRENIMAN, EX-FOOTBALL COACH AT CANOGA PARK HIGH
A memorial service will be held Saturday for Ansel Breniman, the varsity football coach for whom the Canoga Park High School stadium was named.
Breniman died April 17 after a lengthy bout with cancer. He was 89.
Hired at Canoga Park High School in 1930, Breniman coached the gridiron squad to eight Los Angeles city championships. Upon his retirement from the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1968, the Canoga Park High School stadium was named in his honor, according to his son-in-law, Don Weddle.
A Colorado native, Breniman moved to the San Fernando Valley in 1926 and attended UCLA, where he earned an education degree, played varsity football and competed in track and field. As a member of the 1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics team, he was an alternate in the decathlon, Weddle added.
Breniman's college football days coincided with those of a future movie western star who belonged to the Trojan squad. ''He played against John Wayne at USC. They played football against each other,'' Weddle said.
Breniman and his wife, Tallula, retired to Sun City in Riverside County. There he was active with the local Kiwanis chapter, the Masonic temple and the fishing club, Weddle said.
Tallula died in 1987. Breniman is survived by their son, Paul Breniman of Raleigh, N.C.; their daughter, Mary Lou Weddle of Buena Park; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The memorial for Ansel Breniman, who was cremated, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sun City United Methodist Church, 30220 Carmel Road, Sun City.
