Paul Edward BRENIMAN

(26 Sep 1904 - 12 Apr 2000)

Paul "Bud" Breniman came to the valley in 1911 with his parents and brother Gene. His father purchased the ranch and his mother took out a desert claim to add to it.
The one room log school which he attended during elementary schooling was known as Upper Cedar Creek. He remembered riding behind his older brother Gene on a burro, and on the old horse Daisy who would occasionally buck them off, their lunches scattering through the brush. Saratoga only provided schooling through ten grades. Those who wished to earn a high school diploma were sent by their parents to live with relatives or friends in some distant city or town. Some boarded out in Rawlins or Laramie, but others were sent as far away as California or Iowa and could only return home for the summer months.
He enjoyed his first three years of high school in Saratoga. Geometry and physics were exciting subjects to him. In what was to have been his last year of high school, an unfortunate incident occurred. A somewhat abusive teacher punished Paul for throwing erasers and artgums while he was out of the room. Many of the students were participating, but Paul became the scapegoat. He was told to push an artgum eraser across the length of the room. After he had done this, the professor invited the class to laugh at Paul. Paul put on his hat and left the school with no pride remaining.
Wynne Duerig had been hired by the district in 1921 to teach and endeavor to establish a four year high school. He came to the ranch and asked Paul to conssider coming back to graduate. Paul had plans, was instilled with the idea of becoming a petroleum engineer. Paul was the first graduate of Platte Valley High School in Carbon Co., Wyoming, in 1924, the only graduate of that year.
Paul loved math, thought he would teach that subject after some preparation, then could put himself through the Colorado School of Mines. His dream was not realized because of his father's death, which compelled him to return to the ranch after only two quarters of intensive mathmatics at the University of Wyoming. He received the respect of the valley forhis talent in surveying. He was construction foreman for R.R. Crow & Co. for years, served during WW II as a Captain of Ordinance in the US Army.
