Eugene Harlan BRENIMAN

(4 Oct 1901 - 27 Dec 1993)

Excerpts from article: At the age of six Gene and his family moved from Brooklyn, Iowa, to Fort Collins, Colorado where they rented a farm for four years. When he was ten, his father purchased a ranch east of Saratoga, Wyoming on Cedar Creek. They moved to the ranch in 1911. There were probably at that time a dozen families along the creek at the foot of Kennedy Peak.
At that time there were only two automobiles in the county, no radios or telephones. They didn't have daily newspapers or even weekly ones. In the winter time they were snowed in from about Thanksgiving until the middle of March.
Gene spent some time with his grandfather in Iowa during the winter time and graduated from high school there. He began his long line of work experience as an apprentice electrician for the Union Pacific Railroad making 19 cents an hour. In 1922 he was sent to Rawlins and worked in the railroad shops for six or seven months at which time they went on strike and he never returned. He once worked for the forest service, hauled the timber that was used to build the roof on the Medicine Bow Lodge, even herded dudes and ran a pack train out of the lodge in the Snowy Range area. On four different occasions he worked for the Sinclair Refinery, the last time for almost thirty years. In between times he left this area and built dams and power houses in Michigan, Utah and Missouri, worked for the Standard Refinery in Casper, Wy.
In 1965 he went to work for the City of Rawlins as the Water Superintendent. In late 1966 the City Council dissolved the Board of Public Utilities so he left the City's employ and began working as a construction inspector, as a foreham for a construction crew, and even did some work for the state penitentiary. He then went back to work for the City of Rawlins, where he was still employed in 1982. He was on special assignment under the Director of Public Works designing and planning the water treatment plant at Peaking Reservoir.
In his spare time he organized and promoted the Promenaders Square Dance Club, the first such club in the county. He called for eleven years and taught over 3,000 people to square dance. He was an elder at the Presbyterian Church in Rawlins.
