Stephen Cantrell
(1758 - February 5, 1827)
"Stephen Cantrell was born in 1758 and died in Sumner County, Tennessee, February 5, 1827. He married Mary S. Blakemore, at Fort Blount, Tennessee in 1782. She was a daughter of Maj. John Blakemore, of the famous "Donelson Expedition" and was born in North Carolina, March 8, 1765 and died August 2, 1849. Stephen Cantrell probably went to North Carolina at the time of the large exodus south of the Cantrell family, as he was in the service of the Continental Commissioners of that state as Captain of the Guard, during the Revolutionary War. For the faithful discharge of his duties he was awarded a grant of land, 640 acreson Stewart's Creek, Davidson County, Tennessee. The deed is recorded at Nashville. This land lay in what was afterwards Sumner County, Tennessee, which was taken in 1786, by authority of North Carolina, off the east side of Davidson County. During the years of 1792 - 93, Stephen Cantrell was captain of a company of sixty-three men, orgainized for the protection of the country against the inroads of the Indians. He and William Montgomery were the first representatives from Sumner County to the First Legislature in Tennessee, which met March 28, 1796, at Knoxville. He was senator from Sumner County in 1797. See Appendix for Stephen Cantrell's Will.
"John Cantrell was an adopted son of Stephen Cantrell, and became a leading merchant and wealthy salt manufacturer on the Kanawha River, in West Virginia. He was a Representative in Congress 1820 - 30." (THE CANTRILL - CANTRELL GENEALOGY, 1908, by Susan Cantrill Christie, pages 125 - 126.)
