George Washington Walling

(December 2, 1839 - Abt, 1863)

George Washington Walling died in the Civil War. He died of smallpox and was said to have been buried in the Alton Confederate Cemetery, Alton, Missouri. Contact at Alton Museum said that all smallpox victims were sent to an island in the Mississippi River so that the residents of Alton weren't contaminated. They were buried on this island. When the Alton Dam was built this island was covered with water and no longer exists, but the graves are still there under water.
