Elijah Greer

(Abt, 1775 - Abt, 1841)

1840 Pike County, Georgia census.

"Of two of the sons of Aquilla Greer, Jr. and Elizabeth Bandy; many have confused Elisha and Elijah as the same son; but believe me they are two different individuals, their descendants are very elusive and hard to research. Elisha stayed put in Georgia; but Elijah was born about 1775 in Franklin County, Virginia. I place that date for him because of a gap in the the birth years of the children of Aquilla and Elizabeth Bandy Greer. When he was about 21, he migrated to Kentucky, unknown county, and met Mary Acors. They were married in Kentucky and at least 5 of their 14 children were born there. Twelve of these 14 children lived to adulthood. Elijah was in the War of 1812 from Green County, Georgia in the 2nd Regiment (Jenkin's); he was a fifer. He served 6 months and 23 days. I found no land grant received by him. Elijah and Mary were in Pike County, Ga; where he died in 1840 and she in 1843.

The children that I have identified are:

(1) Elijah V Greer, born 1795 in Ky, died in either Wilson or Davidson County, Tenn; married Elizabeth Cook in Davidson Co, Tenn.

(2) Aquilla Greer, born 1796 in Ky and died in either Spalding or Pike County, Ga. He is the one who married Thene Yates 11 Aug 1814 in Greene Co,Ga; I find little info on him; no names of sons; On the 1850 Pike Co, Ga Census; he and Bethenia are both 54 years of age; There are two females: Nancy Brown, age 28; Sarah Kelly, age 25; Nancy Blalock, age 19, and some younger Brown and Kelly children, probably grandchildren; I have no lead on Nancy Blalock.

(3) Louzana "Zanna" Greer , born about 1800 in Tennessee and was married in Putnam, Ga on 16 Jan 1817 to Harvey Perryman, a member of the Creek Nation and was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg and is on the official list of the "dead" killed in that Battle; (NOTE: Zanna must have an estimated wrong year of birth since she is between two sons born in Kentucky)

(4) John A. Greer, born 1802 in Kentucky, died in Davidson County, Tenn; married Myra Green in Nashville on 8 Apr 1838.

(5) Martha Greer, born abt 1803 in Kentucky; Married 8 Apr 1830, Jones County, Ga to James C Lewis.

(6) William Greer, born about 1805, prob Tenn; died between 1870 and 1880 in White County, Ark. He was believed to have married twice. His last wife is named Tempy (unknown). They were divorced in White County Ark on 14 Jan 1861 after 30 years of marriage and a total of 9 children, at least 7 of which belong to her. It is believed that she deserted William. Another researcher identified Lucinda Gray of Pike County, Ga as his first wife; but she married William Grice, not Greer. A marriage for a Tempy and William Greer was located for 27 Sept 1832, in Rockingham County, North Carolina. The date is right but I have no proof that this is the Tempy he married. I cannot locate him at any time in North Carolina. His family including Tempy is listed in the 1850 Benton County, Alabama Census. This census says William was born in South Carolina. The 1860 Census in White County, Ark shows him born in Tenn. The 1870 White County Ark census shows him born in Alabama. The only reason I believe him to be a son of Elijah and Mary Acors is the location to White County, Arkansas, where others of their children relocated.

(7) Abraham Davidson Greer, born about 1810, married 1 May 1830 in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tenn; he married Mary Ann Boland.

(8) Elisha G Greer, born about 1817 in Georgia, married in Pike County to Margaret Frasiers who the Gray family claims in the Index of their book but fail to place him anywhere. The name Grice and Greer look so near the same in the handwriting of the judge who issued the marriage records for Elisha Greer. But I believe this to be Greer.

(9) Alfred Greer, born on 22 Feb 1820, Davidson Co, Tenn, married 13 Oct 1839 in Alabama to Elizabeth J Waters. This family is written up in1890 Eastern Arkansas, History of Ark, White County. This also gives the info of his father Elijah's place of birth, relocating to Kentucky and the name Mary Acors as his wife. Alfred is said to be next to the last child born to them so I suppose he was number 13.

There are 3 more unidentified children who lived to adulthood that I have been unable to locate. On the 1840 Pike County, Ga Census, in the H/H of Elijah and Mary are a young female and an even younger female. I suppose that is a daughter and maybe grandaughter; but I have been unable to identify them." (Bea O'Quin, 2555 Holiday Drive, New Orleans, Louisiana 70131, email: beaoq@email.msn.com>, June 2000., compiled from Arkansas White County Goodspeed History listing Elijah with a brief write up under Albert, probably his youngest son - Elizah and Mary Greer had 14 children; I believe I have identified 9 of them and I believe 2 died before adulthood. I compiled the listing from census records, military records, marriage records, but never could find many land records or wills and/or estate settlements for them.)

Additional information about the descendants of Elijah Greer and Mary Acors is from Bertie "Bea" Lee Greer O'Quin, 2003.
