"Martin Gentry, born ca 1786 in South Carolina; married Elizabeth _____?, who was born ca 1789 in Georgia. They are listed on the 1820 Census of Walton County, Georgia; and in 1830 in Carroll County, Georgia; in 1840 in Heard County, Georgia and in 1850 in Walker County, Georgia and in 1860 in Catoosa County, Georgia. They had eight children. The known ones are: George W. Gentry, James Gentry, born ca 1818; married Martha _____?, Elisha Gentry, born ca 1818, married Martha _____?, William T. (or F.) Gentry, born ca 1820, Martin P. Gentry, born ca 1829, Alfred R. Gentry, born ca 1825; married Jane _____?, Dorcas A. Gentry." (The Gentry Journal, March 2002.) Three of Martin's children, William, Martin and Dorcus, were living with him on the 1850 census, Patience and married James Matthew Howell, and was living next door, and three other brothers, Elisha, James and Alfred were married and were living next door to each other in Heard County, Georgia.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: The child not listed was Patience Gentry, born about 1818, and married Matthew Howell. Matthew and Patience Howell were living next door to Martin Gentry on the 1850 Walker County, Georgia census. The death certificate of William David Howell, son of Matthew and Patience Howell, shows his mother's maiden name as Gentry. )
