Individual Details
Elisha Gentry
(August 31, 1818 - August 24, 1894)
(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: A number of researchers have shown Elisha Gentry, born about 1818, to be a son of Elijah Genrty, Jr., rather than the son of Martion Gentry, as I have shown here. Elijah, Jr. and Martin were brothers. James Bryant Gentry shows in his "A Gentry Tree," Gentry Family Gazette and Genealogy Exchange, Vol 7, No. 40 and 41 (January/March 1989), pages 8-66., that Elisha Gentry, Jr. had only three known children, Harvey, Mason and Bethel John Gentry and died before 1850, probably in Carroll County, Georgia, as he is shown there in 1840, but his widow is living with his son in 1850. Martin Gentry, on the other hand had left Carroll County and was living in Heard County in 1840. This is where this Elisha, born about 1818 was living in 1840 and 1850. There are only two Elisha Gentry shown on the 1840 Georgia census. The older Elisha, born about 1774, shown in Carroll County and the younger Elisha, his nephew, shown in Heard County, born about 1818. Apparently Elisha, Jr. had no son named Elijah Gentry.)
1840 Heard County, Georgia.
1850 Heard County, Georgia census. Elisha, James and Alfred Gentry and their families were living next door to each other.
1860 Carroll County, Georgia census.
1870 Carroll County, Georgia census. Richard Gentry is shown as a teacher.
1880 Carroll County, Georgia census. Rebecca Gentry, age 30, shown as a daughter, and Arther Gentry, age 12, grandson, on June 10, 1880.
(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: I think this is a daughter-in-law, who married David Crim Gentry and had a son Arthur Gentry, as no daughter named Rebecca appeared in earlier census records. However, Rebecca is also shown as living with her husband, David C. Gentry in Heard County, Georgia on June 16, 1880. She could have been living at both places, helping take care of her mother and father-in-law. Elisha Gentry lived at Roopville in Carroll County, which is just north of the Heard County line.)
