William Calvin "Coot" Greer
(January 11, 1857 - May 11, 1928)
"William Calvin Greer was educated at Elk Creek School, 1871 - 1873. He was first a Methodist, but joined the Presbyterian Church after coming to Maryland where he came to live a retired life. During his early years he engaged in extensive agricultural and farming enterprises near Grassy Creek, Ashe County, North Carolina. He was known as a gentleman farmer, he was the original President of the First National Bank of Jefferson, the county seat, and served on a number of civil committees for the Governor of North Carolina. Not only was he of distinguished character, but of distinguished appearance as well. "Mr. Greer was honored and respected by all who knew him ... a man possessing sterling integrity and ability of the highest order." (quote from a letter written by the Hon. R. L. Doughton, a relative, and member of Congress for many years from the 8th District of NC. After spending his active life in North Carolina , he removed to Harford County, Maryland in 1919."
