John Freeland Greer, Jr attended Emory and Henry College with his elder brother; served in the Confederacy; captured at Battle of Gettysburg and was held a prisoner at Elmira, NY. "He was killed by lightening while sheltering under his wagon from a storm", according to J. C. Greer's notes.

John F. Greer enlisted on 17 May 1861 in Co. A 26th Regt. North Carolina Troops.
