James Turner Smith

(May 1, 1842 - March 14, 1914)

"James Turner Smith was a Confederate soldier from November 26, 1861 until March 27, 1865, rank of private with the 50th Regiment Tennessee Volunteers from Ft. Donnelson, Tennessee. He was wounded in the right knee and walked with a limp as a result. His army discharge states he was five feet, five inches tall.

"He was a farmer and raised his children alone and lived his later years with his daughter Lizzie Gist. He loved books and left a very large dictionary and several books on American History, and several religious books, now in my library." (Mary Ligthfoot, 1998.)
