Washington Greer Smith
(January 22, 1816 - August 31, 1899)
"I am seeking the parents of Washington Greer Smith, born about 1817 or 1818 in Virginia. In 1850, he was located in Davidson County, Tennessee, with a wife Elizabeth, age 27, and children James (8), John (5), Tennessee (3) and Henry (6/12). Family history states Washington Greer Smith was a wealthy man, owned lots of slaves and plantation. At the close of the Civil War, he gave all of his slaves Freedom Papers, 40 acres of land and a cabin. All the slaves wanted to remain with him. He is thought to have married twice, both times to women named "Betty," and had children by each wife.
"My dad's sister, Virginia Lucenda (Prior) Millam of Warrenton, Missouri used to write to a double cousin, Lillian Greer, of Kingston Spring, Tennessee. Presumably, Lillian is deceased, as is Virginia Millam. How was Lillian related to us doubled? Was she a Smith who married a Greer?" (Letters from Margaret H.
