Julia Loftin

(January 6, 1845 - April 21, 1885)

"Family legend has it that Julia Loftin Smith had problems with the birth of her 4th child, Joseph. She had severe bleeding, and was doused with cold water in an effort to control the bleeding. It is believed this resulted in blood clots, one of which deranged her mental powers. She became a danger to her children, placing the baby Joseph in the fireplace, thinking he was a log. She was declared insane and committed on May 30, 1879 to the mental institution in Austin, Texas, where she remained until her death in 1885." (Mary Lightfoot, 1998.)
