Ganzavort Melvin "Gan" Cantrell

(February 20, 1845 - Abt, 1921)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Gan Cantrell was called "Gan" by the family. According to Judia's grandmother, Maude, his name was "Ganzavort." According to THE CANTRILL - CANTRELL GENEALOGY, 1908, by Susan Cantrill Christie, page 32, his name was "Ganswitte." According to Ida Mae Tune, Gan's daughter, Ida Mae Tune in Fannie Cantrell's Proof of Heirship paper, he was called "Gansford.")

"Gan Cantrell was tall with black hair and dark skin. He was artistic, thin, and strong. He liked his liquer." (Interview with Bill Magness of Lead Hill, Arkansas, 1986. Bill knew Gan and where Gan lived. He said the grave of Gan was moved from Lead Hill to Milum Cemetery (at Lead Hill) when Bull Shoals Lake was put in. Bill had a map showing where the graves were located and where they were relocated at Milum, but Gan was not listed with a marked grave. He thought Gan died about 1921.)

"It is my feeling "liking his liquer" is why Fanny left Gan. I know he loved her, Grandmother (Maude) said he was always writing to her begging her to come back. He married again but continued to write Fanny, "She's not worth your little finger." I feel like Fanny loved him too, she spoke of him a lot to my Grandmother, Maude, who was Fannie's granddaughter. Fannie had a real strong spirit of melancolia in her life, you see it a lot in her letters and in the stories family members have told." (Judia Kemper Terry, 1988.)

"Cantrell, G. M., age 37, to M. E. Hueghey, age 25, 2/2/1885." (Boone County, Arkansas Marriages, Book B, page 332.)

Information on the children from "The Hugheys of North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas" by Dolores Raines Sutton, Box 118, Wayne, Oklahoma 73095, from the BOONE COUNTY HISTORIAN, Harrison, Arkansas, Vol. IV, No. III, 1981. Information about Martha Elizabeth Hughey's family furnished to Ms. Sutton by Mrs. Irene Justus Lafferty, Springfield, Missouri, niece of Oce Justus, 1981. The Hughey history says Gan was a barber and died about 1921. (NOTE: The years of birth for the children of Gan and Martha Elizabeth all are about 10 to 15 years too early as given in this history, as compared to the 1900 Sugar Loaf Tsp. 3-32-2-92 and 1910 census records.)

"Gan was a barber. One daughter, Allie married a veterinarian. Gan had a daughter Ina, born about 1878, who married J. Ost Justus. Ost was my uncle." (Bill Magness of Lead Hill, Arkansas, 1986. Bill is now deceased.)

"Bill Magness told me about a Tom Cantrell (in 1986), he listed his sons as being: D. W. Cantrell, Ed Ruben, N. C., Alexander, F. M., Alfred, Calvin (C.A.), Thomas P., James E., George. His daughters were: Nancy Ann and Millie Taylor. Bill said Tom died in 1897. I'm not sure who this Tom is but I know who he is not, he is not the brother of Gan, probably a cousin." (Judia Terry.)
