Pinkney Cantrell

(October 26, 1824 - July 29, 1901)

"Pinkney Cantrell was born in Tennessee, October 26, 1822. He married (1) Jane Rowland, by whom he had three sons and one daughter; she died and he married (2) Jane Samuels, by whom he had four daughters and one son. Names of daughters not given. Pinkney and his family moved to Missouri, where he died August 1901." (THE CANTRILL - CANTRELL GENEALOGY, 1908, by Susan Cantrill Christie, page 32.)

"Pinkney lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas prior to the Civil War. He made the mistake of saying he voted for Lincoln, he was pro-South, but anti-slavery. Some men came and burned his house down and tried to kill his family. It was winter time, Jane went to live with relatives, Pinkney walked over the mountains in the snow, all the way to to Christian County, Missouri. He took Gan with him, the other two boys I think were with Jane. She died shortly after the war started." (Louis Adamic's book.)

"P. Cantrell, Born Oct 26, 1824, Died July 29 1901." (Tombstone at Wise Hill Cemetery, Clever, Missouri.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Christie's and Cantrell's books give year of birth as 1822, however, I feel the tombstone is more accurate. This is also the birthdate given for John Jabin Cantrell. Could Pinkney and Jabin have been twins?)

1850 Milam County, Texas census, page 13, Milam and Williamson District, taken 5 October 1850, Dwelling/Family 386/398: Pinkney CANTRELL, 25, farmer, Tenn; Jane CANTRELL, 24, Tenn; Genzenlist (?) M. (Gan) CANTRELL, 5, Tenn; Mary CANTRELL, 3/12, Texas. (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Pinkney and family were enumerated very near Fort Gates in Milam County, Texas. The Fort Gates area is now located in Coryell County. This would have been the fort at which Pinkney was said to have been blacksmith. He is shown in the census as a farmer.)

1860 Washington County, Arkansas census, page 800, Westfork Township, taken 3 September 1860, Dwelling/Family 2182/51: Pinkney CANTRELL, 35, farmer, $600 real estate value/ $400 personal value, Tenn; Jane CANTRELL, 35, Tenn; Melvie CANTRELL, 16, male, student; Sarah CANTRELL, 11, Texas; Mary CANTRELL, 9, Ark; Thomas CANTRELL, 5, Ark; Benjamin CANTRELL, 2, Ark. The three older children attended school during the year.
