"From EARLY RECORDS OF GEORGIA, Volume One, WILKES COUNTY, abstracted and Compiled by Grace Gillam Davidson (Mrs. John Lee), 1932, page 8: "LUMPKIN, GEORGE and wife Ann to James Greer 600 acres on Buffalo Creek adj. Vines Collier and John Lumpkin. Apr 15, 1786".

"The father of James, Vincent, had also purchased 150 acres from the same George and Ann Lumpkin on Buffalo Creek, adjacent to Moses Going and David Bankston, orig. grant 1785, 1786.

"James died in late 1809 or early 1810 in Greene County, Georgia. His estate was appraised by John Peters, Asel Greer (brother of Vincent), A. Greer, and Henry McCoy in April 1810 in Greene County. Listed as purchasers in the settlement of the estate of James on 29 January 1811 were: William Greer, Parmenas Haynes, Henry McCoy, Elijah Greer, William Beasley, Vincent Harralson, William Greer, Jr., Henry Greer, Aquilla Greer, Vincent Watts, Parmenas English. All these men were Greer kinsmen; Vincent Watts, I do not believe that he is akin to my Greer family.

"From GREENE COUNTY MINUTES, 1799-1836, page 276: "Ordered that the Clerk grant letters of Administration to Henry Greer and Ann Greer on the Estate of James Greer, dec." "page 83, dated 3 May 1813:
"William Geer is by this Court appointed Guardian of the personal property of Elizabeth, Sally Sarah, Vincent, Henry H. and Nancy Greer, orphans of James Greer, dec and that John Browning, William Redd and Elijah Bradshaw be received as the Securities and bound in a bond of eight thousand dollars".
The mother of these 5 orphan children must have been living and them in her household, since guardianship papers were not issued until May 1813, 3 to 4 years after the death of their father, James Greer. Also the estate was not inventoried and personal items sold until November 1812.

"Henry Greer and William H. Greer were administrators and at the home of the deceased James Greer divided and distributed the estate on 25 November 1812. A sum of $200 was allocated for the schooling of Sarah Greer, Henry F. Greer, and Nancy J. Greer, children of James Greer, deceased.

"In Greene County, Georgia in the May 1814 Court, William Greer (should be Geer), guardian for the five children of James Greer was paid $200 for board, lodging and clothing for Elizabeth Greer, Vincent Greer, Sarah Greer, Henry H. Greer, and Nancy J. Greer in the settlement of the estate of the late
James Greer.

"In the March 1817 Court, Greene County, Georgia, William Geer, guardian of the orphans of James Greer, deceased, was given leave to sell 187 1/2 acres on Fishing Creek in Greene County adjacent to Jeremiah Ragan. (Ragan was the husband of Polly (Mary) Greer who was the daughter of William, Sr and Mary Jean (Jane) Haynes Greer.

"William Greer (should be GEER) on January 15, 1820, in Greene County, Georgia asked for division of the estate of James Greer among his five heirs.

"On 14 January 1828, David Geer was given a letter of administration on the estate of Vincent Greer who died in late 1827 or early 1828 in Greene County, Georgia. His bond was $2000 and William Greer (possibly Geer) was surety. This Vincent Greer was a son of James Greer, and grandson of Vincent Greer I.

"A noted Greer researcher, Mary Lee Barnes, and I have studied the estate papers of Vinson Greer, James Greer, Vinson Greer No 2 (not Jr. but the son of James Greer), William Geer, David Geer and a William Greer (probably error and should be GEER) with the date 1816 on the unbound estates records, the land deed records, and other papers for Vinson Greer and family.

"Mary Lee Barnes and I, after much study of the records believe that William GEER married the widow of James Greer, who was named Ann. In the will of William GEER, his wife is named Ann. Since there was no guardian for the 5 orphaned children between 1809 or 1810, date of death of James Greer, and 1813 when William GEER became Guardian, where were the children? We believe they were living in the household of Ann Greer, their mother Ann Greer and William GEER were possibly married about May 1813, when he was appointed Guardian of the five orphaned children of James and Ann Greer. And the four children listed in the will of William GEER, are the children born to him and Ann Greer GEER after their marriage. We have studied the 1820, 1830 and 1840 Census records of Greene County for William GEER (GEAR, GEERE), The name is spelled differently in each Census; but we are sure they are the same individual.

"From DESCENDANTS OF STEPHEN ENGLISH OF VIRGINIA - THE ENGLISH FAMILY HISTORY by Margaret English Thurman: from the Will of Henry Haynes, Jr "Item I give to my daughter Nancy Greer". What Greer did Nancy Haynes marry if it were not James, son of Vincent? And the name Nancy Ann has been used in the earlier Haynes generations. Her sisters, Delilah married William Greer, son of Aquilla and Elizabeth Bandy Greer; Mary married David Greer, from Lt James Greer line. All these families were very close. The will of Henry Haynes, Jr is included here because of what is believed to be the relationship of Nancy Haynes to James Greer."
