Individual Details

James Greer Jr.

(Bet 1769 and 1778 - April 29, 1847)

"James and Elizabeth Greer remained in Franklin County, Virginia, where they married, at least until after my grandfather, John Greer was born. Family tradition says they first went to Kentucky, but I have no knowledge of the location in Kentucky, if they did stop there. I have a copy of a deed to land in Fayette County, Indiana dated 1818, but I have reason to believe that James and Elizabeth were in Fayette County, Indiana earlier than that. About the time the older children were getting married both girls and boys began to leave home and some, including my grandfather John, went to Marshall County, Indiana. The girls who married the Danner brothers went to Delaware County, Indiana. Some went to Vermilion County, Indiana and others went either to Vermilion County, Indiana or over into Illinois. James and Elizabeth left Fayette or Rush County, Indiana and went either to Vermilion County, Indiana or some place over in Illinois and then in 1840 they moved to Marshall County, Indiana and lived on the farm which was owned by the son, Moses. Two brothers of Elizabeth Frazier located in Vermilion County, Illinois, but Joseph Frazier later moved to Iowa but Peter Frazier stayed in Vermillion County, Illinois and is buried in that county." (from Edna Greer Hatfield, 1965 - Lois Temple FGS 826.)

"James Greer, born in Franklin County, Virginia, in 1778; removed to Roanoke County, Indiana, in 1820, where he remained through 1830; settling in Marshall County, where he died April 29, 1847. Mr. T. Wilson, Clerk of Franklin County Circuit Court, of Rocky Mount, wrote, October 3, 1941: "I find the Old Marriage Bond of James Greer and Elizabeth Frazier, dated September 22, 1798." James Greer married Elizabeth Frazier, born May 1, 1778; died August 10, 1843, a daughter of John Frazier. Their children were all born in Franklin County, Virginia. Children of James and Elizabeth (Frazier) Greer, eleven: George, Mary, Eleanor, John, Nancy, James, Betsy, Sarah, Jane, Moses and Delilah. (Family and descendant given.)" (GREGOR, Mac GREGOR, MacGHEE, MAGRUDER, GRIERSON, GRIER, GREER --- A HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN OF THE ABOVE FAMILIES AND MANY OF THEIR DESCENDANTS, 1954, compiled by Robert M. Torrence, A.B., F.G.S.P., F.I.A.G., 110 Edgevale Road Baltimore 10, Maryland, page 154.)

"James Greer married Elizabeth Frazer, September 22, 1800. John Frazer, Sur." (OVER THE MOUNTAIN MEN by Anne L. Worrell, page 11, originally published in 1934.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: It appears that the 1798 marriage year is correct, as James and Elizabeth's first child, George was born in May 1800.)

"James (Greer) Jr. born 1769 in Maryland, according to his census record. James Jr. married 22 September 1800, in Franklin County, Elizabeth Frazier who was born in Hanover County, Virginia on 1 May 1779 and was the daughter of John Frazier who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War (said to have a DAR marker by his grave in Illinois).

"James left Franklin County and went first to Scott County, Kentucky. In 1811 he moved from Kentucky to Fayette County, Indiana where he lived on White River, near Connorsville, for almost fifteen years. He then moved to Rush County, Indiana and later to Marshall County, Indiana where he spent the rest of his life. A correspondent sent a letter to this writer and gave the following description of James Jr.: "... fairly small man weighing between 140 and 150 pounds - has dark hair and blue eyes. Elizabeth had a dark complexion, a quiet disposition, and weighed not much less than James."

"For many years prior to his death, James was lame from having been thrown while dismounting a horse. James died in Rush County, Indiana on 29 April 1847, from "lung fever" and is buried in Salem Cemetery "west of Bourbon, Indiana." Elizabeth, who died on 10 August 1843, is also buried there. James was both a cooper and a farmer who raised his own food and grain for the family and stock as did most men of that period. He was the father of eleven children. Issue: [listed]" (ACROSS THE BLUE RIDGE, by Billie Redding Lewis, 1984, page 211.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Additional information about the children of James Greer and Elizabeth Frazier, their spouses and their descendants were taken from letters and family group sheets done by Irma Porter Serviss, Rt 1 Box 93, Tonkawa, Oklahoma in 1964. Copies of these were sent to Judia Terry in 1995 by Jessie Suggs, Box 221, Aspermont, Texas 79502, tele: 817-989-3359, who was working on the Hammer family line, into which James and Elizabeth Greer's daughter, Elnor, married. The records of Irma Porter Serviss show James Greer Jr. to have been born in 1778 and his father, James Greer Sr. to have been born about 1737. The 1778 date makes more sense to me.)

Some additional marriage dates for the children of James Greer and Elizabeth Frazier were indicated on a family group sheet from Yates Publishing, 1988, Joyce L. Baker, 6134 Oakwood Drive, Delton, Michigan 49046. She also indicates Sarah Greer - William Dawson to be her line.
