Charles Greer

(Abt, 1770 - Bef 1849)

"Charles Greer married Rebecca Henson, June 10, 1806. Wm. Curtain, Sur." (OVER THE MOUNTAIN MEN by Anne L. Worrell, page 11, originally published in 1934.) (Lois Temple FGS 825.)

"Charles Greer, born circa 1776. Nothing more." (GREGOR, MacGREGOR, MacGHEE, MAGRUDER, GRIERSON, GRIER, GREER --- A HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN OF THE ABOVE FAMILIES AND MANY OF THEIR DESCENDANTS, 1954, compiled by Robert M. Torrence, A.B., F.G.S.P., F.I.A.G., 110 Edgevale Road Baltimore 10, Maryland, page 154.)

"Charles is the second of the two sons of James and Eleanor (Hughes) Greer. Charles was born in Virginia but whether it was Henry or Franklin County has not been determined since his birth was not recorded. When Charles was twenty-four years old, he married Agnes Sumpter, daughter of George and Elizabeth (Gross) Sumpter, on 8 August 1793. (Some researchers feel that Agnes was the daughter of Henry and Agnes (Dillon) Sumpter, but the speculation is strictly because of their Christian names; however, George's daughter married in Franklin or Floyd county where their records are available, but there are no records of Henry's daughters there.)

"Sometime after 1803, maybe at the birth of her fifth child, Agnes died, leaving Charles with five small children. On 10 June 1806, Charles married in Franklin County to Rebecca Henson who had witnessed his father's will only three months earlier. Surety for Charles second marriage was William Curtain and the minister was Benjamin Sweeney.

"On 26 January 1819, Charles sold to William Jones forty-three acres for two hundred dollars. The following year on 20 January, Charles sold to Owen Price 230 acres on Pigg River. Charles, however, lived on Runnet Bag Creek near the Martins and Underwoods. Not much material has been found on Charles other than he was a farmer and like his Greer ancestors bought and sold land. When and how he died is not known, but he died prior to 1849 when his five children by his first wife signed a joint deed conveying a tract of land which Charles had bought in 1840. For some reason no probate record has been found, but as stated in other sections of this book, many records in Franklin County seem to be missing; the probate record may be one of those."

"Charles is thought to have had four sons by his second wife, Rebecca Henson, but their names have not been proven." (ACROSS THE BLUE RIDGE, 1984, by Billie Redding Lewis, pages 213 - 214. Some of the family and descendants of Charles Greer is from this source.)

Most of the descendants of Charles Greer is from a genealogical chart by Richard L. Greer, Marion, Virginia, 1985.
