Individual Details
James Greer
(Abt, 1761 - April 13, 1844)
"James Greer, son of Aquilla Greer and Hannah Riley, born ca 1761 and died 13 April 1844, married Sarah Goodell." (Marge Hankins, #7 Donder, Christmas Village, Shelton, Washington 98584, 1995.)
"I am a direct descendant of Mary Greer, daughter of James Greer who married Sarah Goodell. James Greer did indeed marry Sarah Goodell of New Hampshire in 1790 in Hartland, Vermont at the home of her parents (she was an only child) and the children you have assigned to them are correct (there were 9). My main source of information is A GENEALOGICAL HISTORY OF THE FAMILIES OF MORRILL, MAINE (available on microfilm through LDS Family History Centers and available in book form from The New England Historic Genealogical Society) and much information is corroborated by A HISTORY OF DUBUQUE COUNTY, IOWA. Mary Greer married Joseph Higgins and they left Maine around 1861 and settled in Dubuque County for the remainder of their lives. There is an entry on their family in the Dubuque history book. While James and Sarah's first son Bartholomew has a son named Riley, the names Aquilla and Hannah do not come down through any of the descendants. This seems a bit unusual. I would appreciate any feedback you can give me as I have been wondering about James Greer's ancestry for a long time. Goodells are firmly entrenched in New England through several generations back."
