Della Mabel Martin
(April 23, 1900 - October 1, 1986)
"Della was born in Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri. As a youngster, Della lived in Seiling, Oklahoma, Las Animas, Colorado and finally in Quitman, Arkansas. Here she met the love of her life, Erle Martin. Erle was the son of Robert and Lillie (Tatum) Martin. He was born 8 March 1902 in Quitman. On 4 December 1929 they exchanged vows in the home of Della's parents. They farmed while living in this area but in 1944 decided to move to Las Animas, Bent County, Colorado where Della had lived as a child. Erle went to work for Fawcett Cleaners in Las Animas. He later operated the North Bent Texaco Station and built the Auto Rest Courts. Farming was still in his blood, so along with everything else, he did some farming. Della taught school in the Rixey and McClave area for 28 years. Della and Erle were members of the United Methodist Church.
"On 19 January 1980 Joseph Erle Martin died at the La Junta Medical Center. He was buried on Monday, 21 January 1980 in the Las Animas Cemetery. His six grandsons were casket bearers. A little later Della moved to a retirement home and she would write the author about taking the elderly ladies there for a walk and she loved taking motor trips with her daughter and son-in-law and visiting her grandchildren. To the author, through her letters, she was forever young. On the 1st day of October 1986, she died at the La Junta Medical Center and was buried beside her husband in the Las Animas Cemetery. The same six grandsons carried their grandmother to rest. Della's Social Security number was 524-32-8749." (Reta M.
