Virginia Lee "Virgie" Jones
(May 19, 1885 - October 21, 1964)
"Virginia Lee Jones was known as "Virgie" by her family. Early in her teens, Virgie fell in love with a blue-eyed Franklin County young man named Henry Sigmon. Her sister Louise often told the story of Henry coming to the house to ask their father permission "for his daughter's hand." Louise, the mischievous younger sister not wanting to miss any of the excitement, hid at the top of the stairs with Virgie who, when seeing Henry coming to the door, ran upstairs to primp. When Henry asked permission to marry Virgie, her father kept repeating that she was too young. Standing it no longer, Virgie came flying down the stairs saying, "I love him; I love him."
"Five days after Christmas in 1900, Virgie, age 15, and Henry, age 24, were married by the Reverend W. A. Via. Only two months later, her parents moved to West Virginia leaving the fifteen-year-old Virgie with her new husband in Franklin County. There they lived for twenty-four years before moving to Kanawha County, West Virginia, where they lived in the Rocky Fork area which lies below Martins Branch, but later built their home on the land inherited from her father.
"After moving to West Virginia, Virgie endured many tragedies, but her faith in God helped her through each one. She always said that God was testing her and if ever she weakened during one of those crushing blows, it would show a lack of faith.
"Virgie died of heart failute on 21 October 1964 in Charleston, West Virginia. Henry Lee Sigmon suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died in Raymond City, West Virginia on the 4th of July 1945. Henry and Virgie both descend from Peter Sigmon, the first Sigmon in Franklin County. Virgie was a descendant from Peter's daughter Mary, who married William Shively; whereas, Henry was a descendant from Peter's son Robert."
