Greer Stanton Martin

(April 3, 1846 - March 3, 1938)

"Greer Stanton (Martin), born 1846, was the eldest child of Matthew Martin Jr. According to the 1850 census records of Franklin County, Greer was age 4 and Asa was age 2, making their birth dates 1846 and 1848, respectively. The 1860 census records show that Greer was the first born. Greer and his wife are buried in the Martin Cemetery where their tombstones are inscribed as follows: "G. S. Martin, 4-3-1849, 3-3-1938; Polly Ann Martin, 3-2-1868, 6-5-1957." There is a possibility that the stonecutter cut a 6 upside down and did not correct it; on the other hand, knowing that his parents did not marry until 1848, Greer may have changed his date of birth.

"Greer married first on 20 March 1873 to Malinda Underwood, age 19, daughter of William B. Underwood. Malinda died prior to 1880 when the census indicated that Greer was a widower, head of household, and had not only a motherless five year old daughter living with him but also his parents and his younger siblings. Undoubtedly his parents lived with him so that his mother and sisters could care for him and his daughter.

"Greer married second Polly Gillispie by whom he had the remainder of his children and who was the ancestor of Corene (Martin) Sims who wrote the following to this author: "Grandpa lived on top of a mountain in the Endicott section of Franklin County, about 6 miles from us and we walked on trails to get there. There was no regular passing of folks by his home. Grandpa never came to visit us and I always thought he was eccentric, but as I think about it now, he was very old to make the trip across the mountains and ford the streams to get there. I also remember well that I, along with my sister, Christine, walked to Grandpa's funeral in March 1938, a cold time indeed. Christine was 12 and I was 13."

"Barbara Chauncey wrote the following directions to Martin Cemetery: "Going west on Rte 40 from Ferrum, turn right at Endicott on State Route 793; go 1 mile; turn left at S. R. 818; proceed approx. 4/10 of a mile. Two houses are on left side of the road with an unpaved road between them. Directly opposite the houses is a fence and gate; go through the gate; cemetery is approx. 100 yards on left." (ACROSS THE BLUE RIDGE, 1984, by Billie Redding Lewis, pages 172I and 172J.)
