Individual Details

Aquilla Greer Jr.

(August 20, 1828 - March 7, 1894)

"Aquilla Greer came to Marshall County, Mississippi in 1845 with his father. The family lived about two miles from the town of Holly Springs. He was a Baptist and a Free Mason. He served in the 34th Mississippi (Col. Benton's Regiment) and in the D Company of Capt. Wilkins CSA. This family is listed on the 1860 census of Marshall County, Mississippi with a personal property value of $8000 and real estate valued at $2000. His brother, James was shown living with Aquilla's family and his values are listed at $9000 and $2200." (Information on the family of Aquilla from the 1860 Federal census of Marshall County, Mississippi and from the notes of Mrs. Margaret Bailey of Coffeeville, Mississippi as reported in GREER KINSMEN, by J. B. Bell, 1986, page 54.)

"Aquilla Greer married Eliza Wright, 26 June 1851." (Marshall County Marriage Book ?, page 141.)

"Aquilla Greer was imprisoned in Rock Island Federal Prison Camp for 18 months. He was bankrupt and had to start over after the war. He lost most of his wealth when the slaves were freed. He belonged to Co. D 34th regiment, Mississippi, Col. Benton. He enlisted with Capt. Wilkins and Capt. Jeffries later. He died June 5, 1918 at Holly Springs, Mississippi." (ROYAL HERITAGE OF THE GREERS, by Carolyn Beal, 1993, pages 177 and 177H.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: The last three children added from GREERS THAT GOT TO GEORGIA by Julian Greer with help from Duke Wright Greer, Holly Springs, Mississippi. They also appear in ROYAL HERITAGE OF THE GREER, by Carolyn Beal, 1993, page 177. Julian has also shown this Aquilla Greer on his chart 3B-8, page 30b, in the wrong place and with a death date of 7 March 1894. Mary Lee Barnes in MY GREER LINEAGE, page 61, shows this Aquilla Greer with a death date of 7 July 1894, and on page 79 with a death date of 7 March 1894. I am not sure which death date is correct, but as Mary Lee Barnes states that she took the 7 March 1894 from his obituary, I am assuming that is correct.)

1860 Marshall County census: (Need to add this information.) The marriage of Aquilla Greer was recorded in the Marriage Records of Marshall County, Mississippi.

Some information from his obituary, Holly Springs, Mississippi newspaper, 22 March, 1894.
