"James R. Cantrell was born in 1842 in Carroll County, Georgia. Year of birth verified by Civil War pension application. He accompanied his parents to Van Zandt County, Texas in 1854. Here he grew to manhood and when the war of 1861 grew hot, he enlisted September, 1861 in Co. H, 10th Texas Cavalry CSA at Red River County, Texas. He was discharged in April 1863 for disability. He re-enlisted in Co. D, Bates Regiment, Texas Infantry and served until the end of the conflict.
"He married 1st Pharly Piles on 27 March 1867 in Van Zandt County, Texas. She was born in 1840 in Arkansas. They moved to Henderson County where they lived until Pharly died aboout 1877. They were recorded in 1870 in Precinct #1 of Henderson County. In 1880 he was listed in Van Zandt County and his parents, one unmarried sister, and one widowed sister and her famiily were living with him. There were four children by his 1st marriage. He married 2nd to Mary Dovie Mayfield 11 Jan 1883. She was born 21 July 1858 at Talladega, Alabama, the daughter of W.B. and Emorline (Dobber) Mayfield. It is not known if there were children of this marriage. They resided many years at Athens, Henderson County, Texas. It was there that he applied for a Civil War pension on 21 Jan 1910. His application was approved and he drew a pension until his death. Mary Dovie died 18 Jan 1919 at the home of his son-in-law, L.D. Stover."
