Alexander M. Cantrell
(December 4, 1836 - July 30, 1890)
"Alexander M. Cantrell was born December 4, 1836 at Cantrell Cross Roads, McMinn County, Tennessee. He moved with his mother and her children from Tennessee to Dade County, Missouri in 1853, and they removed to Webster County, Missouri in 1855 and settled on a small stream later named Cantrell Creek.
"Alexander married Harriett Manry July 22, 1862 in Webster County, Missouri. She was born October 17, 1840 in Tennessee. She was the daughter of Edward Manry, who moved from Tennessee to Alabama, and later he removed to Webster County, Missouri. In November 1861, Alexander enlisted at Rolla, Missouri in Col. Phelp's regiment for six months. After leaving the service, he went to Illinois, where he was engaged in farming for a few years. Elizabeth, Elmina and Hezekiah were all born in Illinois. The low land in Madison County along the Mississippi was a slew and swamp land that could not be farmed. The hill land in Madison County was practically virgin soil capable of producing a good yield of various agricultural crops. In about 1867, Alexander M. and his family returned to Webster County, Missouri and they purchased 360 acres of good land in a wild state. About half of the farm was bottom land, and about half of the farm was under cultivation with good buildings. Alexander M. died July 30, 1890, and Harriett died December 21, 1904.
