"James R. Cantrell was born in 1833 at Cantrell Cross Roads, McMinn County, Tennessee. The U. S. census of McMinn County, Tennessee for 1850 included the name of James R. as a member of the household of Nancy Smith Cantrell. The name of James R. Cantrell was included on the U. S. census of Webster County, Missouri as being head of a household, and he was 37 years of age in 1870. According to the U. S. census of Webster County, Missouri in 1870, James R. was born in 1833. A review of the marriage records of Webster County, Missouri disclose that James R. Cantrell married Muhuly Castell, May 1, 1859 in Missouri. In 1870, he was living on a farm in Union Township, Webster County, Missouri. A review of land records in Webster County disclosed that James R. Cantrell purchased land from Robert Tate Cantrell. The U. S. census of Webster County, Missouri in 1880 indicates that James R. was living alone in High Prairie Township, and he worked in a mill. It appears reasonable to assume that his wife, Mahuly Castell Cantrell, died some time before 1880. James R. was an heir of his mother, Nancy Cantrell, estate. A review of the marriage records of Webster County, Missouri, reveals that James R. married Sarah C. Ruckman (Buckman?), December 10, 1885. According to the probate records of Webster County, James R. Cantrell died March 24, 1889. His brother, Felix Gabriel, was appointed administrator April 1, 1889 of the estate. His heirs were listed as Sarah Cantrell, widow, Elizabeth Nagworthy and a son James R. Cantrell, Jr. The U. S. census of Webster County in 1870 lists his children as Sarah F. age 9, William age 8 and Joseph Castell in Ozark Township." (CANTRELL - CANTRILL, 1972 by Horace Elbert Cantrell, page 198.)
