Charles C. Cantrell

(July 4, 1836 - )

"Charles C. and Henry C. Cantrell were twins. Charles married Letitia Sanders Allen. She was a daughter of Judge George Webser and Louise Douglass Allen. Judge Allen was at one time attorney general for the state of Tennessee; circuit judge of Sumner County, and one of the best known lawyers of his time. When he died all the citizens of Gallatin ceased work and closed business for twenty-four hours in his honor. Judge Allen's sister, Eliza H., was the first wife of Gen. Samuel Houston, who at the time of their marriage was Governor of Tennessee, who was later President and Governor of Texas.

"Early in life Charles C. Cantrell entered the mercantile business, forming a partnership with Maj. John D. Allen (afterward his brother-in-law). At the beginning of the Civil War, he enlisted as a private in Maj. D. C. Douglass' Battalion of Cavalry, C. S. A. He was detailed later as commissary sergeant with Major Bridgewater's command, General Martin's division. He served with the army from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to Atlanta, Georgia, and surrendered at Company Shops, North Carolina in April 1865, with rank of captain.

"After the war, Captain Cantrell entered the milling business with his former partner, Major Allen. In 1868 he moved to Nashville and in 1890 to Louisville. He and his wife now reside at Sparta, Tennessee with their eldest daughter.

"He has been a devout Christian from childhood, being a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal church, south. He is also a member of the Frank Cheatham Bivouac of Confederate Veterans. Capt. Charles Cantrell is six feet high, with an erect military carriage, blue gray eyes, gray hair, and from many sources in the south we have heard that he, Judge Robert Cantrell and Judge James E. Cantrell were the three courtliest and handsomest men in that section of the United States." (THE CANTRILL - CANTRELL GENEALOGY, 1908, by Susan Cantrill Christie, pages 135 - 136.)
