William Cantrell

(January 22, 1792 - )

"William Cantrell spent all his life in Sumner County, Tennessee. He was a wealthy planter, owning a large number of slaves. One of his sons writes: "He was never known to whip a slave, or cause one to be shipped, nor to sell one, not to separate a man and wife." He was highly respected and dearly beloved by all who knew him. He was a man of fine personal appearance, commanding in stature, mild and affable in his manners and a true man in all the relations of life. He was in the War of 1812, served at the Battle of New Orleans and was an officer in Carroll's Brigade." (THE CANTRILL - CANTRELL GENEALOGY, 1908, by Susan Cantrill Christie, page 134.)
