Robert Raiford

(Abt, 1683 - Bef 1731)

"Robert Raiford appears to have lived his entire life in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, although some of his lands were later to become a part of Southampton County, when it was formed from Isle of Wight in 1749. As specified in his father's will, provisions for the distribution of land and other chattels were made, should Robert die without issue. This might imply that Robert was unmarried at the time of the drafting of his father's will. Since he received the largest bequest from his father, Robert evidently had his father's confidence and trust.

"Only one record pertaining to this Robert Raiford was located in the Isle of Wight courthouse. In 1731, he sold "one hundred acres more or less" in the lower parish of Isle of Wight County to Thomas Turner of the upper parish, this land coming to Robert by conveyance form his father, "now deceased, being a part of a patent of 2,100 acres granted to George Pearce on September 6, 1674, and part of a patent of 2,500 acres granted to George Pearce on April 23, 1681." This document was signed by Robert (now married) and his wife, Anne. (Isle of Wight Deed Book, Volume 4, page 84) In 1642, Isle of Wight County, heretofore one parish, was divided into two, with Lawnes Creek the northern and Pagan Creek the southern boundaries of the upper parish; and Pagan Creek the northern and the Nansemond County line the southern boundaries of the lower parish. Both parishes extended to the North Carolina line.

"No will of Robert Raiford has been located. Since no information to the contrary has surfaced, it is assumed that he did die without issue."
