Ken Serratt, 71, of Amarillo died Thursday, June 9, 2005. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Landrum Medlock, Johnny Dellis, chaplain, and Dr. Delbert Serratt officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery East by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.

Mr. Serratt of Amarillo was born March 22, 1934, in Sudan and graduated from Sudan High School. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 in Okinawa. He attended West Texas State University and received an associates degree in fire science from Amarillo College. Mr. Serratt married Beth Adams on Sept. 1, 1957. Along with their four children, they shared their home with 26 foster children from 1975 to 1983. Ken retired from the Amarillo Fire Department after being our hometown hero from 1964 to 1991. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters Union. Ken was also a member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church and served on the board of trustees. Ken and Beth always witnessed for their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was also president of the Greater Amarillo Foster Parent Association.

Ken had a God-given talent for art and blessed the Panhandle area with oil paintings, wall murals, custom signs and sketches. His smile could brighten any situation, and his greatest gift was doing for others. He had an enormous appetite for life and his three C's: Christ, Charity and Community. He helped his wife direct D.R.E.S.S. Child Development Center at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church for many years. He was a self-taught computer genius and helped many a buddy with any problems and enjoyed every minute of it.
He was preceded in death by his father, J.J. Serratt in 1967, and a brother, Sonny Serratt in 2000.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ken Serratt Jr. and wife, Karrie, of Friday Harbor, Wash., and Kolby Serratt and wife, Dawna, of Sunray; two daughters, Karen Edmondson and husband, Ward, and Kristi Lancaster and husband, Wayne, all of Amarillo; his mother, Louzell Serratt of Sudan; two brothers, Del Serratt and wife, Mary Lou, of Amarillo and Mel Serratt and wife, Carol, of Hico; six grandchildren, Joseph Edmondson and wife, Kristie, of El Paso, Misty Edmondson, Hayden Biggers and Mykell Lancaster, all of Amarillo, McKenzie Serratt of Friday Harbor and Allie Dawn Serratt of Sunray; a great-grandson, Israel Edmondson of El Paso; and a sister-in-law, Hilda Serratt of Salem, Ore.

The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, in care of Olivia's Angels, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176; Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center, 1500 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106; or Greater Amarillo Foster Parent Association, 6200 W. Interstate 40, Amarillo, TX 79116.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
