Nicholas Gentry

(August 22, 1655 - Abt, 1736)

The two brothers, Nicholas and Samuel Gentry came from England as British soldiers, entered land in New Kent County, Virginia in 1684. They probably came over in regard to the Boxer Rebellion in January 1677.

Nicholas Gentry was born in England in 1655.

1677 He and his brother Samuel were soldiers in His Majesty's army, and Nicholas was 22 years old when he was sent to Jamestown, VA, to help quell an Indian rebellion.

Nicholas came to Virginia with his bother Samuel as British soldiers to put down Bacon's Rebellion (1676). Charles II sent two ships under the command of Sir John Berry. These ships sailed from England late in 1676 arriving in Virginia early in 1677. Sir John Berry was master of the H.M.S. Bristol and John Ashby was master of the ship H.M.S. Rose. The army arrived after the rebellion had ended.

1683 Nicholas and his brother Samuel were discharged from the army in 1683 and chose to remain in America rather than return to England. Nicholas settled in New Kent County, Virginia, adjacent to lands owned by his brother Samuel.

1684 The first record of Nicholas Gentry is found in the old land books of the Colony of Virginia the record of a patent of land in favor of Samuel Gentry, dated October 21, 1684, and described as being in New Kent County, adjacent to the lands of Nicholas Gentry and others.

1687 The second mention of his name is found in St. Peter's Parish Register of New Kent County, VA, in a record of the baptism of his daughter Elizabeth, dated August 29, 1687.

1689 The St. Peter's Parish Vestry Book also has a record dated May 4, 1689, of the appointment of Nicholas Gentry as road overseer.

1709 On January 8, 1709, and on March 14, the same year mention is made that the lands of Nicholas Gentry, Joseph Gentry, and others are adjacent to each other. He is mentioned again in 1711, 1723, 1734, 1735, and 1739.
