The following article appeared in the 3 FEB 1991 Courier Democrat, Russellville, AR newspaper in a column called "Yesterday in the Valley" "...June 26, 1913 Y.(J) P. Rowland writes from Winnsboro, Texas: 'I was born in Pope County in 1843, and lived near the mound in Charley Landford's field two miles from Scottsville as a boy. Father later moved to Appleton. I grew up and went to the war in Capt. Joe Howard's Company. After the war, I came to Texas and married Esperann Harmon, and lived here until she died in June 1911. That summer I returned to Arkansas, but found everything much changed with the exception of Whiteoak Mountain, which had not been moved away. I visited all over Pope County and found some of my old soldier friends.'..."
