Robert Terry Simmons

"Robert Terry Simmons was a very fiery and energetic man. He owned a liquor store on Main Street in Newport, Arkansas. Robert was a well-known business and political figure of Jackson County, Arkansas. He fought in political issues in the turbulent days of Jackson County. When Newport was made a city, Bob was the first Chief of Police. He also served as a tax assessor for ten years. While deputy sheriff for the County, he was responsible for the manhunt and capture of the robbers of the Oliphant train robbery. Bob was a member of the Episcopal Church where he married in 1893. Bob loved cats and was often seen walking around town with cats on his shoulders." (Barbara Daugherty, barjene3@juno.com, 2005.)
