Peter Hitt

(Abt, 1763 - August 31, 1802)

Some information about Peter Hitt is from Germanna Record No. 1, July 1961, second printing Febuary 1982, Editor Dr. Bejamin C. Holtzclaw.)

"Peter Hitt, 17 Aug 1802 - 25 Oct 1802 Wife, Hannah Hitt. Children; Presley, Harrison, Alexander, Mary, Susannah, Thaddeus, Nancy, Fanny, Elizabeth and unborn child. Unless wife remarries, estate not to be divided until her decease. Exrs; son Pressley and Gabriel Green of Culpepper County." (Abstracts of Wills, Administrations, and Marriages of Fauquier Co VA, 1759-1800 by J. Estelle Stewart King, 1986. Will Bk 3, page 440.)

"Peter Hitt elisted in August 1777 as a private; served under Captain Elias (Silas) Edmonds and Co. Thomas Marshall. SAR record also says he is son of Herman born 1721 (John's brother, which appears to be incorrect.). I believe his grave is the one cleared by Mary Doyle Johnson in July 1997 near Warrenton. Wanda Glover says born 1763 and made prisoner at Camden during war. A new stone was placed at his grave by the Germanna group in July of 1999 along with the old marker and a SAR marker." (McNamara records - SAR.)

The following from J. B. Hitt, 2007, jbhitt@att.net:

"You ask about the ancestry of Peter Hitt born 1756. I have seen different lineages for Peter - (1) His father given as Harmon Hitt; and (2) His father given as Henry Hitt. Maurice R Hitt Jr. According to the best evidence given thus far his lineage is Peter Hitt the immigrant - John Hitt b.1743- Peter Hitt b. 1756 father of Alexander Hitt b. 1787." There has been some question as to which family this Peter belongs. Some have it that he was the son of Harmon Hitt. But there is little doubt, given the evidence found thus far, that he was the son of John Hitt. Hannah, in her affidavit for a war pension states: "that she was married in Turkey Run Church in the County of Fauquier, by old Parson Craig, and hath lived in said County ever since." He left a will and names all the children except the tenth whom Hannah was carrying at the time the will was written. The witnesses to Peter's will were Arthur Gladstone and Mary Shaw (she was his mother, and second wife of his father, John, who later married John Shaw in 1791). Arthur Gladstone was Peter's brother-in-law, having married, in 1786,to Susannah Hitt. He enlisted in Fauquier County,Virginia for three years under Capt. Elias Edmunds and fought at Camden under Baron DeKalb. During the battle of Camden, South Carolina (August 1780). He was captured and made a prisoner. He was wounded by a cavalry charge having been slashed by a sword on each arm and side. He was after wards exchanged and served to the end of the war. Hannah was living at Leeds Manor, Fauquier County, Virginia in 1841. She received a pension in 1843." (Maurice R Hitt, Jr.)

"Peter was known as "Peter on the River." Peter was the eldest son of Mary and received one-third of his fathers estate at the time of his mother's dowry. He was known as Peter of Turkey Run and left his will which named his children. It was written February 13, 1802 and is recorded in Will Book 3, page 369." Note from the records of Gordon Grant Lane.

"You might be interested to learn also that a group of Hitt descendants met earlier this month to install a US government tombstone marker for Peter Hitt, at the small family graveyard where Peter Hitt raised his family. The new stone joins the original one, placed by his family, with a still fine inscription on it, and an SAR marker that was placed a few years ago. We are working on clearing the entire graveyard (which had been totally overgrown) and will fence it so it can be maintained. The present owner of the property (no relation) has been very cooperative. Hannah (James) Hitt is also buried here but (so far as we know) none of the children were. The Hitt log cabin is still standing though not in reconstructable condition. One sheltered side seems almost new, though. The farm (no longer farmed) is located on the north side of the Rappahanock River where it is crossed by Route 645, which goes north from just west of Amissville, Virginia. The graveyard is at the top of a hill on the right side of the road; an overgrown lane goes off the road just after the bridge. If you are ever out this way, you might want to visit."
