John Hitt Sr.

Note: Germanna was in Essex County when John was born; it is now in Orange County, Virginia.
In 1761, John and his son John, Jr. were a members of the Fauquier County Militia during the French and Indian War (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol 7, pp 305-6). John was a Baptist Church organizer and is listed as a patriot for his allegiance to the Colony of Virginia rather than the English Government. John was listed in the 1770 Rent Rolls for Fauquier County, Virginia, with 216 acres of land, John Hitt, Jr. with 53 acres of land. The Fauquier County rent rolls for 1777 lists John Hitt with 216 acres of land and John Hitt, Jr. with 53 acres. After John's death in about 1782, the Fauquier Land Taxes show the 216 acres of land allotted to his heirs as follows: 1783-1787: John Hitt 50 acres, Mary Hitt 141 acres, Elias Hitt 25 acres; 1788-1793: John Hitt 144 acres, Peter Hitt 72 acres.
On 23 August 1756, John Hitt and his wife Mary acknowledged a deed of gift to Harman Hitt (Prince William County, Virginia Minutes 1756-1757, p. 183). If John married a woman named Sarah Pace, she is definitely not to be confused with Sarah (Day) Pace who first married Richard Pace and who married second John Hitt the son of Harmon and Mary (Weaver) Hitt.
Since John Hitt died without a will, his children are difficult to name except for John Hitt, Jr. John Hitt, Jr. was appointed administrator of his father's estate during the October Court of Fauquier County. (Fauquier Minute Book 1781-1784, p. 78). The estate was also appraised by John Jr. and an inventory returned during the March court; the estate was inventoried on November 14, 1782.
