Zachariah Talley Jones

(February 8, 1841 - February 27, 1931)

"Ninety years old, Z. T. Jones; pioneer Lea County resident, Civil War veteran and father of eight other residents of this part of The country passed away last Friday at Lovington after a short illness. Funeral services were conducted in The Methodist Church by Rev. W. R. Burnett. All of Mr. Jones' eight children were present at The funeral. The body was laid to rest in The Lovington Cemetery by The side of his wife who died in 1922. Z. T. Jones was born in Conyerville, Tennessee, February 8, 1841. He moved to Johnson County, Texas with his parents when he was 11 years of age. At The age of 21 he volunteered and joined The Confederate army and served three years. Mr. Jones was converted and united with The Methodist Church at The age of 45 years. He has been a member of The church for 45 years. He has lived a consecrated Christian life, and was always cheerful and happy. He was an affectionate father and husband and loved to be with his children. He left Texas in 1914 and came to New Mexico with his wife. His companion departed this life on March 9, 1922. After he was left alone, Mr. Jones made his Home with his children. He was with his son, J.J. Jones of Ochoa, New Mexico, when he was taken ill with blood poisoning in The foot. All was done for him that loving hands could do, but God saw fit to take him Home on February 27. The departed man had lived long and well. The people of The earth have been made better because he lived. He has departed this life to live a richer life yonder in The city of God. Z. T. Jones was a resident of Baylor County for about 15 years living near Round Timber." (Obituary from Mrs. Sidwell Maggie Jones.) Sidwell gave us some information on her parents in the late 1950's or early 1960's when we were entering names in our Family Bible. She gave her Dad's name as Zeke Tally Jones! I did not know it was Zachariah until I was searching for his Civil War records and saw Maggie's birth certificate. I assumed at The time that The Zeke stood for Ezekiel! She gave her Mother's name as Veteria Ann Marchbanks. Maggie said that her Mother, Veteria, suffered so much with asthma that she and her sister Tishia took over The household duties when she was unable to do them.) (From Wayne Irwin. The following is also from Wayne Irwin.)

Source: Z. T. Jones to grandson: When I was a small child, my Grandfather would come to visit my mother, Maggie Jones Sidwell, yy brother and I, and stay for long periods of time. He took turns visiting with his children after my Grandmother, Veteria Ann, died. I would pester him to tell me stories of his life escapades. One story as I remember him telling me was of a time when he stopped to open a gate, a bushwhacker jumped out with a gun. My Grandfather picked up a revolver, lying in The floor of The buggy, not knowing if The old thing would fire or not, and started pulling The trigger. The bun finally fired, shooting The bushwhacker. My grandfather did not know if he killed The man or just injured him. The other grandson tells The same story except that The bushwhacker was a neighbor of Z. T.'s with whom he had had a court case over The boundaries of their adjoining property. The court ruled in favor of Z. T. In this version, Z. T. shot off a part of his thumb when The old revolver fired and shot The neighbor.

Source: Grandaughter of Z. T. Jones: Z. T. played The fiddle! They never called it a violin. It was a sore spot with Veteria as he liked to play for dances!

Source: Grandson of Z. T. Jones: Grandpa Jones told The story of when he was in The Civil War, they were fighting enemy soldiers, Union, in some town. He was engrossed in returning fire from a soldier who was holed up in a building when all at once he turned around and his whole army had retreated. Two of his brothers rode up on horseback and said, "What in The ___ are you trying to do, get yourself killed?" I replied, "No, I just thought I was fighting a war!" and they then, got me out of there.
