Woodrow Franklin Hatcher

"Woodrow Franklin "Woodie" Hatcher, 86, who retired from the Navy Department in 1970 as a management engineer in the office of the chief of naval operations, died Oct 19, 2000 at a hospital in Gulf Breeze, Florida. He had pneumonia and emphysema. Mr. Hatcher, a longtime Alexandria resident before moving to Gulf Breeze three years ago, was a parttime bartender at the Fairlanes bowling alley in Alexandria from 1970 to 1990. He was born in Enfield, Illinois, and attended George Washington and American Universities. He was a Forest Service surveyor in Illinois before coming to the Washington area in the mid-1930s, working briefly with the Social Security Board in Baltimore and then as a draftsman with the War Department in Washington. He was a draftsman during World War II and joined the Navy Department after the war. His honors include Navy's Distinguished Civilian and Distinguished Meritorious Service medals. His memberships included the American Legion, the Loyal Order of the Moose, the National Society of Parliamentarians and the National Rifle Association. He was a past member of First Christian Church of Falls Church. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Kathryn Hannah Hatcher, and a daughter, Mary Ann Glaeser, both of Gulf Breeze; a sister; a half-sister; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren."
