John C. (or A.) Greer

(Abt, 1829 - Bef 1880)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY IN RESPONSE TO THE FOLLOWING QUERY: There were at least two John Greers in 1850 Tennessee, each who married a Louisa. The first John Greer, age 21 of Davidson County had already married Louisa. He was living in District 4 of Davidson County, as was Elijah Greer, who was probably his father. I have found no other evidence of him in census records in Tennessee, so there is a good chance he is the John Greer of Wood and Hunt Counties, Texas. The second John Greer, age 23 of Madison County was not married in 1850. His future wife was Louisa Ingram. This is obviously the same John and Louisa seen in Madison County in 1860, living in a group with the Ingram family and John Bobbitt. This John Greer is still in Madison County, Tennessee in 1870, with no children, with the same Ingrams and John Bobbitt next door. I have connected him with the John Greer of Texas. After checking several sources, I have not seen him with the middle initial A. This may have been confused with the second John shown below, and included by various researchers.)

"In March I heard from Gary Murrey and Dee Hollowell. They have been working on the Hunt County, Texas Greer's and they 'found' me since that is the county that I have my John C/A/ Greer family. They both feel that I am from ELIJAH V. and Elizabeth (Cook) Greer family. My John C. could have been for John Cook Greer. Elijah and Elizabeth had a son John A. Greer born about 1829 in Tenn. My John C./A was born 4 July 1832 in Tennessee. He is listed as their 3rd son. We have thought that our John Greer married Louisa H. Jones, but they feel that she was a HUMPHREY. They have John Greer and Louisa Humphrey married 20 Oct. 1849 in Nashville,Tennessee. They are on the 1850 Census of Davidson County as is Elijah V. Greer. Both in the 4th Civil District. John Greer is age 21 and Louisa is 19 married within the year. No real Estate and he was a farmer. There were two John and Louisa's in Tennessee. One stayed and mine came to Texas. We have never been able to find our John on the 1850 Census in Tennessee. If this my John and Louisa the age are off a couple of years, but that would make both of them legal to get married. 1860 John and Louisa are on the Wood County, Texas census with my Great Grandfather Sidney Alexander Greer who was born 4 July 1858 at Quitman, Wood County, Texas. So they moved to Hunt County between 1858 and in time for the 1860 Census. 1870 they are in Hunt County. In 1880 Louisa is alone with their children because John died 8 March 1880 in Hunt County and is buried in the Graham Point Cemetery at Greenville, Texas. Sid Greer wrote for the Hesperian Newspaper in Floydada, Texas some interesting articles. In one of them he is telling about going to school in Hunt County and "Cousin Kit" gave him a spanking for breaking a dish. His mother (Louisa) wasn't happy about that. This was another clue for Gary and Dee. They are from the Thomas Jesse Greer family. Hunt County, Texas marriages by Ingmire shows Thomas J. Greer married Ann E. Pace 24 January 1861. T. J. Greer married Keturah Jones 29 July 1877 (she was called Kit). J. W. Greer married E. T. Morrison 16 December 1800. This Joseph W. Greer is Sidney A. Greer's brother. Maybe this is where we were told that Louisa was a Jones. There are a lot of Humphrey's in the area were my Greer's were. My only problem with John and Louisa is that they were married in 1849 and we do not have children for them until Sid. A. was born in 1858 in Texas. I know many times several children were born and did not live to adulthood. Sid and his wife Mary Frances had two little boys born in Hunt County and died and are both buried in the Graham Point Cemetery. My Grandmother did not know about these two boys and thought she was the oldest child. It seems to run in our family for the women to have 2-3 miscarriages before the first child comes along and lives. John Greer had a brother Joseph Greer that also came to Texas. It's a long story but Joseph was accidentally hung when a posse found some horse thieves in Joseph's barn and thought he was hidding them, so they hung all of the men. Joseph was married and had a son, but we don't know anything about this family. John and Louisa had the following children: Sidney Alexander Greer 1858; Joseph W. Greer 17 Nov 1859 (hung); Mary A. J. Greer born 1862 --died age 17; Vincent Vance Greer 17 June 1868--never married (some say it was Vance Vincent); Harriet Collins Greer 4 Feb 1879. Vincent Vance is another clue for Gary and Dee. One doesn't see that name very often. Sid Greer name a son Nay Vincent Greer but Uncle Jake changed it to 'Jake" before he went into the Navy. His full name is on his recrutement. John Greer was a farmer, a brick mason, carpenter and a preacher. I guess it took a lot to keep the family fed. I hope after 40 years that my John Greer has a family. We have looked since the late 1960's for his parents. Kay Walker Peterson, 45-2 West Compress Road, Artesia, NM 88210, 575-746-3101; kpgeneolady@plateautel.net, June 2008.
