"Along with his brother Calvin Greer, William was a member of Company G, 4th Tennessee (Starnes) Calvary Regiment, part of Nathan Bedford Forrest's original command. There are 3 Card Numbers Company Muster Roll in the Confederate records for William M. Greer, Co G, 4 (McLemore's) Tennessee Calvary showing him as Blacksmith: 48283034, 48283143 and 48283228. They show William, 39 years of age, enlisting at Cheatham by Capt. O'Hara for a period of 3 years, on 9 December 1861. They cover the period from January 1862 thru December 1864."
