Sarah Caroline Cantrell

(February 1, 1854 - March 11, 1931)

"Sarah Caroline (Cantrell) Cantrell moved with her parents to Webster County, Missouri and they settled on a small creek in High Prairie Township known then as Cantrell Creek. The compiler of this sketch recalls a visit with Sarah Caroline in 1930 relative to progress made in education, farming and transporation during her life. Grandmother remarked that she professed faith in Christ at the age of fifteen, but she could not understand one passage in the Bible, "man would learn to travel in horseless carriages and fly farther and faster than birds." All of her children living then owned horseless carriages, and she had seen many planes. Her congeniality and mild manner were partially responsible for the exceptionally good relationship with neighbors. Sarah Caroline was industrious, honest and a devoted mother to her large family. Her husband was away from home a substantial amount of the time buying and selling livestock. She assumed the responsibility of a mother and in many instances those of a father. She had a good memory for she could recall the date of birth and death of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was buried beside her husband in the Sixteenth Cemetery on Cantrell Creek near the farm home." (CANTRELL-CANTRILL by Horace Elbert Cantrell, 1972, pages 56-57)
